How Gold Star Referrals Works for Homeowners (Instant Matching, Explained)

Hiring help for your home usually starts with a search box and ends with phone tag, unanswered forms, and your number in the hands of companies you never chose. Gold Star Referrals was built to work the opposite way: you make one request, and the match comes to you — instantly. This post walks through exactly what happens, step by step, including the parts designed to protect your privacy.

Step 1: You tell us what you need

Start on the request page. You give us your name, phone, email, ZIP code, whether it's a home or commercial property, and the service you need — from roofing and plumbing to mold testing and dozens more across our service categories. Adding timeline and job details helps your pro arrive prepared. The whole form takes about a minute, and it's free — homeowners never pay for matching.

Step 2: The instant match

The moment you submit, our system checks your ZIP code against the pros in our network. If a company offers your service in your area, you see your match right away — no waiting for a callback to find out if anyone covers you. There's one rule working quietly in your favor: where a pro holds exclusive territory for a service, they're the only match for that area, so their full attention is on your request. Otherwise you may be matched with up to three verified companies — a short list to choose from, never a crowd.

Step 3: Your information goes only to your matches

This is the part we're stubborn about. Your request and contact details are shared only with the pros you're matched with. There's no public directory with your project posted on it, no selling your information to a list of bidders, no robocall spiral. Matches are shown only to the person who submitted the request — which is also why you can't browse the pro directory without making a request. The privacy runs both directions, on purpose.

Step 4: The pros reach out — and they're pre-verified

Every company in the network cleared a bar before receiving a single request: they're insured (certificate verified before activation) and licensed wherever their trade requires a license. Your matched pros contact you to discuss the job, and you hire whoever fits — or nobody. There's no obligation, and the match costs you nothing either way.

Step 5: Your feedback keeps the network honest

A few days after the match, we check in. Your feedback goes privately to the Gold Star team — it's never published — and it's one of the ways we decide which companies stay in the network. Companies with upheld or serious complaints can be removed. You'll also be offered a direct link to leave your pro a public Google review if you'd like to. So the system keeps improving: pros who do great work get recommended more, and every homeowner's experience shapes the next homeowner's match.

What if nobody covers your ZIP yet?

You'll see a message saying we're currently looking for pros in your area for that service. Your request is still saved, and the moment a pro joins covering your ZIP, we contact you. Uncovered areas are exactly where we recruit next — your request genuinely helps the network grow toward you. More answers live on our FAQ page.

Questions & Answers

Does it cost anything to request a pro?

No. Requesting a pro is completely free for homeowners and property owners. The pros in the network pay for referrals, and that's what keeps matching free on your side.

Why can't I just browse a list of pros?

For privacy — yours and theirs. Matches are shown only to the person who submitted a request, so your project details and contact information never sit on a public page to be scraped or spammed. Some companies separately choose a public listing on our Local Partners page, but the matching network itself is private by design.

Who receives my information?

Only the pros you're matched with — up to three companies for a service, and just one where a pro holds exclusive territory. Your information is never broadcast or sold to a list.

What if no pro covers my area yet?

Your request is saved, and we contact you the moment a pro joins covering your ZIP code. Areas with waiting requests are where we recruit next, so asking genuinely helps.

Are the pros actually verified?

Yes. Before a company is activated, we verify its insurance certificate and, where its trade requires one, its license. After jobs, homeowner feedback helps decide which companies stay in the network.
