How to Choose Your Service Radius (10 to 50 Miles)
When you join Gold Star Referrals, you don't pick counties or draw shapes on a map. You pick a center ZIP code and a radius: 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 miles. That one choice determines the territory where homeowners get matched to you — and, because lead prices step up with distance, it also sets what you pay per lead. This guide helps you pick deliberately instead of guessing. The full price ladder is on our pricing page.
What your radius costs
The 10-mile base is $15 per Shared lead / $25 per Exclusive lead, and each 10-mile step up adds $5 per lead: 20 miles is $20/$30, 30 miles is $25/$35, 40 miles is $30/$40, and 50 miles is $35/$45. A bigger radius means more requests and more driving; a smaller one means fewer, closer, cheaper leads. Neither is automatically smarter — it depends on your work.
Start with your real service area, not your ambitions
Ask where your good jobs already come from. Most local service companies find their profitable work clusters within a comfortable drive of home base — the neighborhoods where your trucks are seen, your yard signs sit, and your reviews mention the town names. That cluster is your natural starting radius. Claiming 50 miles because it sounds bigger puts you in drive-time territory where estimates eat half a day and your crew burns hours on the highway instead of on jobs.
Match the radius to the work
- Emergency and short jobs (repairs, cleanups, testing): smaller radiuses — 10 to 20 miles — keep response times realistic and margins healthy.
- Big-ticket projects (roofing, remodeling, mitigation systems): a 30- to 50-mile radius can make sense, because the job value absorbs the travel.
- Route-based services (lawn, pest, recurring visits): density matters more than distance — a tight radius with many customers beats a wide one with scattered stops.
Mix radiuses by plan and service
Your radius isn't one global setting — it's per service and works together with your Shared/Exclusive choice. A common pattern: Exclusive at 10–20 miles in your home territory, where your reputation is strongest, and Shared at 30–50 miles for wider coverage at a lower commitment. You can also run different services at different sizes — tight for quick-turn work, wide for the big projects. The For Contractors page walks through how territory selection works at application time.
You can change it
Your first radius is a starting point, not a marriage. Watch your first leads: if requests keep landing beyond where you happily drive, shrink it. If you're closing everything nearby and want more, expand or claim the Exclusive version of the territory next door. Because leads simply deduct from your $200 deposit — with a warning at $50 and no contract — adjusting costs you nothing but a conversation.
Questions & Answers
What radius sizes can I choose?
10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 miles around a center ZIP code you pick. Territory is tracked ZIP by ZIP behind the scenes, so matching is precise even though your choice is simple.
How does radius change my lead price?
The 10-mile base is $15 Shared / $25 Exclusive per valid lead, and each 10-mile step adds $5 per lead — so 50 miles is $35 Shared / $45 Exclusive.
Can I use different radiuses for different services?
Yes. Your plan is set per service, per area. Many pros run a tight radius for quick jobs and a wide one for large projects, and mix Exclusive in their home territory with Shared further out.
What if my radius overlaps another company's Exclusive territory?
Exclusive territory is first-come: if another company's radius already covers part of yours for the same service, that part stays theirs, and the rest of your radius is yours. We'll tell you exactly where you stand.
Can I change my radius after I join?
Any time. There's no contract, and leads deduct from your deposit — so adjusting your territory is just a settings change, not a renegotiation.
